Skiing in summertime comes to Autonomia in July. I’m planning to travel far from home next month. First, I’m writing a new review appraising Michael Ritchie’s 1969 movie, Downhill Racer, about an American mountain loner who sets out to ski in the Alps for another Thursday with Robert Redford.
Last month’s movie star series traced a defiance theme, whether Fred Astaire’s bachelor earns Leslie Caron’s love in the taboo Daddy Long Legs, Miss Stanwyck takes aim as Annie Oakley or Mr. Redford attempts government reform in 1980’s Brubaker. Autonomia featured an advance review of Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, a retrospective for the 40th anniversary of Steven Spielberg’s 1982 masterpiece E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, the debut of an exhibition of painter John Kane’s work in Pittsburgh and, on a personal note, an obituary of a friend and statesman from Evanston, Illinois. Topics include my newly award-winning journalism.
Articles slated for ‘22 include details on the next set of revolving movie stars. Look for new reports, reviews and travelogues. Future stories include Points in Pittsburgh. Also, look for articles about these classic, new and recent television programs:
BBC miniseries I, Claudius the 1976 literary adaptation about the Roman empire
Mom, an Alcoholics Anonymous-themed series on CBS
Greg Berlanti’s recent Manson Family mass murder miniseries
Dynasty on the CW (series review)
A review of the six-season NBC series This Is Us
