I had seen parts of this movie for years until I decided about a year ago to spend an afternoon watching it from start to finish. It was delightful, and in retrospect one of the things that made it so was the glimpse into what life was like in the 50's in New York City. But I hadn't even thought about that aspect of it or others until reading your review. That's one of the things I love about your reviews. They often make explicit feelings and ideas that I only held implicitly when I watched the movie. Keep them coming😀
Thank you, Russ, for making your point explicit. I can’t express how much this matters to me. I am really grateful to you for expressing your thoughts. And I certainly will.
In addition to your insights, I have to mention that the film does us the favor of removing the explicit fabian socialism from the book. This is rare example of the film being MUCH better than the book. It's been my favorite Astair film for ages (Holiday Inn comes in second). Thank you for bringing this gem to your readers' notice.
Thank *you* for informing me about the novel; I did not know that. “Holiday Inn” is on my list—I’ve enjoyed past viewings—for another look and review in this ongoing series. I marvel at his talents, vitality, habits, rituals and joyful sense of life.
