Robert Redford was born in Santa Monica, California on this date in 1936. Mr. Redford, who co-starred in the first movie I saw in a theater, became one of my favorite directors and actors.
Robert Redford is the topic of my exclusive interview with the late Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osborne. For now, you can read it on my website (which will be undergoing renovation). He’s also among five original movie stars I’ve selected for rotating articles of analysis and review.
Read Autonomia’s newest Redford movie review (of Downhill Racer) here. Previously, I examined his 1980 film Brubaker and Barry Levinson’s 1984 epic about baseball, The Natural. Next month, read an extensive analysis of his 1992 picture, Sneakers, for the 30th anniversary of its debut.
Today is also a day to remember the Great One, Roberto Clemente. The late Pittsburgh Pirate athlete was two years older than Robert Redford. I reviewed his surviving family’s memorial book (read the review) and wrote several articles in 2021 and, this spring, I won a Press Club sports journalism award for my Clemente retrospective in Pittsburgh Quarterly. In the future, I want to return to Roberto Clemente’s story, discover the whole truth and tell the Great One’s untold tale.
Meanwhile, here’s to a happy birthday and birthday remembrance to these two bright stars.
