Get to know Barbara Stanwyck with a revolving, new series in May. Miss Stanwyck, who improves nearly every movie, deserves attention. New articles will also examine former Chicago TV hostess Oprah Winfrey and Chicago-born dancer and choreographer Bob Fosse, who directed Cabaret, Pippin and Chicago. I’ll also remember a newspaper editor who countered, challenged and influenced me.
April featured baseball-themed articles including a review of Robert Redford in The Natural (1984), a Jackie Robinson Day review of the PBS documentary Jackie Robinson and my Opening Day review of Clemente, a bestselling biography of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ number 21, aptly described as Michelangelo’s David in a baseball uniform.
I started writing and publishing Autonomia a few months ago. Subscribe or upgrade your subscription, and, in either case, read, share and recommend the articles. This is an ongoing exchange of values; it’s a trade I want to keep.
Thursday with Robert Redford debuted for the paid subscriber. Other occasional features include Tie-In Tuesday, the occasional streaming or television Series Review, Friday with Fred Astaire and the monthly Book Review. I’ll introduce a new regular feature, Just Deserts, next month with a goal to render a measure of justice. You can read the first Barbara Stanwyck article later this week.

I appreciate the feedback, corrections and words of encouragement. One paid subscriber—screenwriter and director Mike Binder (Black or White, The Upside of Anger, Reign Over Me and the novel Keep Calm)—provided an unsolicited endorsement. On Twitter, Mike placed me among “the best writers” he reads on Substack, adding that, in his words, I’m writing “[r]eally smart stuff.” Coming from Mike Binder, whose books and movies I’ve recommended for years, I’m flattered and grateful.
