Birthday Message for Iran’s U.S. Dealmaker

Dear Mr. President:

I’m writing this to wish you a happy birthday on June 14th. Eighty is as important a milestone as any major age milestone. Reaching 80 is an achievement, particularly given that Iran’s threatened to assassinate you and there’ve been at least three publicly known attempts to murder you, each under mysterious and essentially unresolved circumstances, which makes this birthday greeting especially urgent and relevant.

I write this as someone who vehemently opposed your presidential candidacy long before opposition became fashionable in the nation’s ivory tower institutions and as someone who changed my mind during your first presidential term.

I oppose your dealing with Iran, which I’ve referred to as a colossal mistake. Only defeat or another siege can come from trading with savages bent on annihilating the greatest nation on earth. Yet this is what you’ve been doing for over two months following the 12-day defense you rightly invoked for the first time since Iran initiated war on America 47 years ago.

Appeasing Iran will be your legacy if you subject America to an Iran deal—including any “memorandum of understanding”—and your reputation will be defined by a date which, if your word that your birthday’s the date of this pact comes true, will “live in infamy,” to paraphrase another wartime president. To pledge America’s honor to an agreement with America’s foremost enemy makes your birthday the exact moral opposite of America’s birthday: like Obama’s Iran death pact, this’ll be a black day for the West.

You can be great, President Trump. You can make America great again. But not without renouncing an Iran deal. You owe it to America, the nation which you are sworn to defend and uphold as a republic based on individual rights. As the first president to seriously defend America against Iran, you also ought to renounce an Iran deal in the name of the best within yourself.

Until and unless you renounce any Iran deal on principle, you’re appeasing the enemy. To use your favorite terminology: if you make a pact with America’s worst enemy, you’ll be a loser who ought to be fired—impeached—for this fact alone (and Congress ought to impeach your pro-Iran vice-president, too).

Iran declared war in 1979 and began slaughtering, seizing and torturing Americans and other innocents, including Jews and citizens of our ally, Israel. Nothing can change this fact. You retaliated against this savage regime for the first time in 47 years and for this you deserve credit. Nothing can change this, too.

But this compounds the colossal error of your Iran deal. Today’s your birthday. You shall be judged for the consequences of your U.S. pact with Iran. Credible supporters such as Mark Levin, Gen. Jack Keane and Victor Davis Hanson also oppose your pact with Iran. Besides myself, Leonard Peikoff and General Michael Flynn and others forecast mass death unless America ends states that sponsor terrorism, starting—not finishing—with Iran.

That this reality-based potential for mass death looms as the possible end of America culminates everything you’ve made. The consequences will blacken your name, which will come to mean something ghoulish. If military generals and scholars are right about the folly of your pact with Iran and Iran attacks America, you shall bear justly the blame.

That’s not catastrophizing, Mr. President. That’s delivering what you were first elected to do: judge based on the whole truth. “You can’t always get what you want,” goes your signature campaign song. This means Iran can’t make a deal because Iran’s evil. By dealing with Iran, you act as Iran’s agent, and this means you’re granting the enemy time to pierce the border—unless they’re already here, as Gen. Flynn writes—putting America dead last.

I urge you to go by reason and scrap any Iran deal. It’s never too soon to change your mind. Thank you for your attention.
