September’s table of contents features two anniversary-themed reviews, a new article in my series on Liza Minnelli movies to recognize and honor a living legend and a story about an ominous siege pre-dating that black Tuesday on the 11th of September in 2001 (with a plug for an external new media project called “Reality Check”).
Autonomia’s reality checked, too, and marked by my personal imprint. For example, I’m inspired by Liza Minnelli’s stamina, endurance and ability, which is why I chose to focus on Liza; this month, with a review of her 1981 hit movie, Arthur. The picture mines humor and a minor degree of mindfulness in the issue that might’ve destroyed her—and didn’t—namely, alcoholism. This is also the theme of a mother-driven television series, Mom, which I reviewed this month on the 10th anniversary of its debut, which coincides with a new milestone in my own journey toward serenity.
Besides alcoholism, autism affects people’s lives, too, in various ways. The 35th anniversary of Barry Levinson’s Rain Man gave me an opportunity to finally watch and review a movie that continues to shape how autism is fetishized and misunderstood. There’s more—all of this month’s content is free to preview, read or listen to on Autonomia’s podcast—with more to come.
