As year twenty-one of the 21st century comes to its final days, Autonomia nears the first anniversary. Accordingly, I’m creating the publication’s first promotional pitch, a limited offer which will launch soon. Look for new articles and other additions, too.
This new book features rare reporting and writing by the fabled director of some of Hollywood’s greatest motion pictures, including some personal favorites. Billy Wilder directed Stalag 17, The Apartment, Sunset Boulevard, Some Like it Hot and The Lost Weekend. These movies depict addiction, sexuality, rebelliousness under dictatorship, suicide and delusion, underscoring that Wilder was a serious artist. The book’s editor, a film scholar I met this summer on campus at University of Texas in Austin, sourced, had translated and selected articles written by the filmmaker when he lived in Europe. My article on Billy Wilder’s journalism is one of two November book reviews. The other covers a show business legend as well; TV’s top wardrobe designer, Bob Mackie.
As the holiday season imposes new and familiar pressures with charms and wonderful occasions, remember to use, browse and read Autonomia’s newest feature: the forum. Readers of all types can comment on various articles. Read and comment here for a recent example.
If you do not pay to subscribe, you missed reading this perspective on the Alec Baldwin shooting and a review of Clint Eastwood’s new film, which in my judgment merits one of the 91-year-old artist’s most significant performances.
Paid subscribers also get other, undisclosed perks. I’ve met with paid subscribers across the country this year, soliciting feedback and getting deeper into details. The founding subscriber gains additional value including dibs on future Autonomia opportunities. I want every reader to want to become a paid subscriber. This is Autonomia’s top goal.
You can choose among these three options:
Founding ($250 or more)
Monthly ($7)
Annual ($79)
Get more information here. This week, I’m on writing assignments in Western Pennsylvania. I’m also scheduled to visit a Mississippi River city next month. As ‘21 gets closer to ‘22, amid the holidays, you’ll get access to more new reviews, travelogues and articles. As ever, live free, read and let me know what you think.
