Thoughts of studying and learning from downfall (focusing on the plane crash as personal) forged this month’s theme. Both main articles — about Black Tuesday’s 20-year mark and my new article for Pittsburgh Quarterly on Roberto Clemente — tie into personal tales, one with a snapshot of my visit to Clemente’s ballpark statue and the other featuring an illustrated cover I created for a fictional story I wrote as a boy about simultaneous passenger jet hijackings. It’s the first time I’ve shared one of my childhood illustrations (see it here).
There’s also this roundup of articles about that Black Tuesday known as “nine eleven” which, taken in sum total, repudiate that blank term as trivialization of mass murder.
Read next month’s review of a recent bestseller about If— author Rudyard Kipling’s life in America. If possible, and only if it’s not an imposition, consider setting aside some time to read; Autonomia’s monthly book review tends to run longer. October topics in progress also include conferences, travel and Clint Eastwood’s new movie.
This fall, I’ve added a new feature: the forum. Readers can comment on the article about my exclusive September cover story about my visit to America’s United 93 war memorial. Read and comment here.
