True Crime, starring and directed by Clint Eastwood, debuted on March 19, 1999, marking a midpoint in now-ninetysomething Eastwood’s hybrid career as leading man and director. Based on a novel by Andrew Klavan, the acting, script and direction lack the smoothness of his later films, such as Sully, Richard Jewell and Invictus, especially for the dramatic mystery genre. This movie’s easy to recommend, however, if you enjoy the director’s brand of dry, topical, naturalist filmmaking.
